Infinity Mirror Illusion

How it Works

To create an Infinity Mirror, there are four main components you will need: a two way glass mirror (aka one way mirror), a standard reflective mirror, a frame, and LED lights.

black-shadowbox-frame

Infinity Mirrors are designed to give the illusion that the lights within them are trailing off into the abyss, continuing on forever into infinity and beyond. This is achieved through the placement of your LED lights between the two glass mirror panels.

It takes two perfectly parallel mirrors positioned directly across from one another to achieve this visual effect. If one is slightly out of place, you will instead have your lights curving endlessly to one side or the other.

Often times the front mirror is half silvered, aka a one way mirror, which allows a certain percentage of transparency to show through and permit light to be fully emitted.

Materials & Tools List

  • Glass Cleaner
  • Wood Glue
  • Measuring Tape
  • Microfiber Towel
  • Chop Saw

Choosing the Best Mirror

When it’s finally time for you to start your project, you’re going to need to find the right kind of glass mirrors to use to achieve the infinite tunnel illusion.

First and foremost is picking your Two Way (One Way) Mirror glass, and Standard Mirror. Two Way Mirrors are known as semi-transparent mirrors, meaning  70% of the light will be reflected while 11% is transparent. The distance between the two parallel mirrors can really play a significant role on the overall effect and look of the depth perceived in the illusion.

Below is a list of mirror options you can use as the top layer for your infinity mirror setup:

Glass Two Way Mirror

The Glass Two Way Mirror is great to use if you want minimal ghosting in the infinity effect and you want the viewer to see the infinity without seeing themselves at the same time. The result is a dark, twisty infinity with a lot of depth. As if you were in a endless tunnel of illusions.

  • 70% reflective, 11% transparent
  • Best for most infinity mirror illusions
  • Can be tempered and/or laminated

Acrylic Two Way Mirror

(Touch to Animate)

The Acrylic Two Way Mirror is ideal for projects that need a mirror that is more durable and less likely to break. Avoid it for larger projects because it will create a funhouse effect.

  • 70% reflective, 30% transparent
  • Max size recommended is 12″ x 24″ for 1/8″ thickness
  • Max size recommended is 24″ x 48″ for 1/4″ thickness

Colored Acrylic Two Way Mirror

The Colored Acrylic Two Way Mirror is just fun! Imagine all of the possibilities with these color tints. You can have any color mirror you want to match any room or space.

  • Fun colors for unique effect
  • Comes in 1/8″ thickness

(Touch to Animate)

Glass Smart Mirror

The Glass Smart Mirror is great for projects that require switching the mirror effect when the lights off so that it is a regular mirror. A Glass Two Way Mirror will just appear like a dark tinted glass when the lights are off.

  • 70% reflective, 30% transparent
  • Can be tempered and/or laminated
Dielectric Mirror

(Touch to Animate)

Dielectric Mirror

The Dielectric Mirror also can provide an infinity illusion. This could be awesome for projects that need a larger clear glass case and then utilize only a portion of the mirror for an infinity effect.

  • 45% reflective, 55% transparent
  • Can be tempered and/or laminated

For instance, this Lego Millenium Falcon Coffee Table could be encased in Dielectric Glass and then on the bottom for the infinity elevator the glass floor would be seamless and the lego would appear to be sitting on a mirror. One would just need to add the LED strips and standard mirror to the bottom of the coffee table and paint the rest of the bottom black to achieve this effect.

(Touch to Animate)

Two Way Mirror Film

The Two Way Mirror Film can be used on clear glass to create an infinity mirror. This is a great budget option but notice that the mirror quality is much more foggy, not as crisp as the glass and acrylic options.

  • 80% reflective, 5% transparent
  • Great budget option

Standard Mirror (Bottom Layer)

One HUGE advantage to using Acrylic on the bottom layer is if you want to add a special inside shape like pink pumpkin picture. Acrylic is easy to drill into so you can hide the wires and plug it in seamlessly.

For the bottom layer, any of the semi-transparent two way mirrors can be used to get a wide variety of special effects.

Choosing The Best Lighting

You cannot achieve your illusion without picking your lights! LED lights provide quick and convenient results when applying them into your mirror display.

With their small size, LED lights are easy to measure to the length you need, and cut down to size for your piece’s frame. They come in a variety of options in both size and color. You can purchase single colored, multicolored, and remote controlled colored LEDs. Some can even be paired with Alexa or Google Home for voice command and app controlled features.

Buying vs Building Your Frame

Your last “must have item”  for this project is the frame you’ll be keeping all your materials packed into. A place that’s big enough to hold both your mirrors, LED lights and the battery pack powering your lights.

If you’re content with a pre-defined size, the IKEA Ribba is a good choice for an inexpensive frame. Alternatively, you can purchase shadowbox frame moulding or just order the completed frame from us in a custom size.

You can make this be simple by purchasing a pre-made shadow box that has an inch depth within the frame for ample space to display your lights. The only adjustment you’ll need to make is carving out a slot for your battery pack and its wires to come out of your frame.

If you’re more of an adventurous designer, you can build your frame from scratch. You will need to grab additional materials to do this type of custom frame for your mirror display, starting with the type of wood you want to work with using. We chose to keep things simple and utilize a pre-made frame to save time during our building process.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I clean the inside of my infinity mirror?
As long as you build your mirror properly, you will not have to clean the inside at all. Pre-clean all the pieces before you start assembling your infinity mirror. Ensure that there is a snug, tight seal upon assembly and all you will have to clean is the top layer. Compressed air can help blow out any debris inside.

Can I use two standard mirrors instead of two way glass?
Two standard mirrors would not create the infinity effect desired. The two way glass allows just the right transparency and reflection to cause the effect. There are a number of other options below to choose from that will also work for your one of a kind infinity mirror.

Can I use a regular frame for my infinity mirror?
A regular frame most likely does not have enough space to insert two panes of glass and the lights. For this reason, we recommend using a shadowbox frame for regular wall mirror projects.

Does the size of my project matter?
As long as you have the required materials, the size of your project doesn’t matter. You can make a small functional mirror or a large gaming table. Check out our blog here on one we made that’s 70″!

What other projects can I apply the infinity effect?
The infinity effect can be applied to tons of ideas. We make chess boards, tables, Infinity 3D TV displays, and even corn hole boards! Follow the basic structure and get creative – we have everything you need!

Should I order tempered or non-tempered glass for my infinity mirror project? Tempering is great for infinity mirrors that are being used as a tabletop or in a public space where risk of breakage is higher.

It will create a small distortion in the reflection around the 1″ perimeter of the glass – not very noticeable in this type of project.

Have you ever thought about the connection between crystals and art? What about crystals and portals? This video beautifully illustrates how crystals have influenced works of art, and can even be works of art themselves.
Anthony James has an art piece located within this art exhibit as well. Can you guess what it is? It’s the same one from the video before! The geometric shapes within the infinity mirror can be associated with a crystal-like appeal, and it fits right in!

  1. I am in the process of making an infinity mirror out of a small fish tank, but I am stuck. I can not for the life of me get it to where it covers all corners and sides like the “cube”. Could you please tell me where to cut and connect on the lights please. 16″ high & 12″ side to side and 12′ of lights and extra pieces for the total of 14’5″. One more thing, where is your power source hook up you did a great job covering it all up. Any tips & tricks will be most appreciated. Thank You, I also can not wait to see more.

    1. Shawn,

I am following up via email for you to further discuss. It depends on the overall look you are going for! 🙂 There are two different types of cubes and for a fish tank — will there still be a functioning fish tank in the center?

  2. Hi there, cool site by the way.

I’m trying to make the icosahedron as seen in the anthony James video.

I’m totally in love with it. I bought a welder and learned how to weld just to build the frame. Which is ready.

But I can’t work out what type of mirror he used to give it that clear but blue tint. Do you have any idea?

Please help. I bought a sample of two way glass (actual glass) 6mm and it has a dark brown effect on the Light.

I tried film. But it’s too blurry.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks so much.

    1. Thanks for reaching out! The Glass Two Way Mirror is weird because at first it seems the tint would make everything brown or tinted. However, once installed, the Glass Two Way Mirror looks the best *by far* and is likely what is used by Anthony James. This is because the Glass Two Way Mirror is one-directional so it is limiting the reflection of anything else in the room, producing a deep (and clear) infinity effect. Otherwise if you use film, acrylic or basically any other semi-transparent mirror you also see a reflection of yourself looking at the object.
When you install it you just need to make sure the mirror coated side is facing toward the inside of the 3D object.

  3. If I use a two-way mirror on opposite sides of a project, like a room divider, would I get the same effect looking at the mirror from both sides?

    1. Just from one side, unless you’re using our Smart Mirror glass. In which case, it would be semi-reflective and semi-transparent on both sides.

    1. Very cool! I hadn’t thought of combining the True Mirror and Infinity Mirror concepts! Thank you for sharing it!

    1. Great question! Yes, any lighting can be used. Often LED’s are used because they’re bright and energy efficient.

  4. What a great page! Thank you for the tutorials and gathering all these resources in one place! Do you know what LED strips are in the rainbow hypercube video? I am looking for a strip that has spectral/rainbow color like that, with each light a different color versus chunks of colored lights. Thank you 🌈☺️

  5. Hi, wondering about the lights, all of them seem so long. Is the off cut pieces just garbage after it’s cut to fit?
    Thanks 🙂

  6. Planning an infinity mirror bar top. I have seen some contradictory posts on where to place the LED light strip between the glass.

For those of you that have build an infinity mirror, specifically a table. What is the best placement in your opinion and why?

    1) Option 1 – mid way between the the mirror and glass?

    2) Option 2 – at the top, hidden behind a small strip so they are not readily visibly? Just like in this image. https://imgur.com/a/T55rKVY That image was taken from this blog post – https://maker.pro/arduino/projects/how-to-build-an-infinity-mirror-with-controllable-leds

Thanks for your opinions and ideas!

  7. Hope you’re still out there! 😉 What would you anticipate if one made an infinity mirror with a ~5″ gap between the mirrors and objects placed inside?

  8. I am looking to make 4 /20 x 20 squares for a free standing wall for an event. Nothing permanent. This will be inserted from behind in the openings of the wood frame openings of the wall. This wall is used as a multi purpose event wall.

What would you suggest using to create an infinity look based on something not permanent? Type of mirror can not be heavy and led lights will have to be battery packs because servers are behind wall.

I was thinking the mirrored film. If so ,what type would you suggest?

Trying to achieve this look for a gala for art of healing within their budget.

Where do you purchase the different style mirrors you discuss in your article ?

    1. Hi! The acrylic two way mirror is very light, and easy to transport. You can use this to make an infinity mirror instead of the glass two way mirror.
